Welcome
The Florida State University offers a wide variety of educational programs, and features over 130 departmental majors housed within
fifteen colleges and schools. Selecting an academic major is one of the most important decisions you will make in college. Therefore, this decision should not be made without serious consideration, and should be based on your unique interest areas and academic talents.
For some students, this process is straightforward and a major can be easily identified. For others, the major selection process can be quite challenging, and requires a greater level of exploration. Wherever you find yourself in this range, Florida State University has the resources and tools to help you identify the major that is best suited for you.
STEPS PROGRAM
Self Exploration
During the self exploration phase, students are encouraged to meet with their academic advisor to begin the process of exploring what they know about themselves. Students can also meet with career advisors at The Career Center who can provide more in-depth career assessments. We also ask students to consider participating in extracurricular activities and research.
Major Exploration
In this phase, students are asked to visit the academic guide to start researching majors in order to make an informed decision. Academic advisors can help students select introductory courses in their majors of interest. Students should also speak with appropriate faculty and major advisors. At The Career Center, career advisors can also help you identify and explore occupations that you might pursue with a specific major.
Career Exploration
In their career exploration, students can further their understanding of how their major prepares for them for life after college. At The Career Center, students can: meet with a career advisor to apply for jobs or graduate school; learn how to write a resume; practice their interview skills; find a part time job, internship, or co-op to gain experience; network with alumni and other professionals who share their interests; or attend career expositions such as Seminole Futures. All students are encouraged to upload a resume into SeminoleLink to take maximum advantage of these and other Career Center services.
