Career Exploration

The initial Self and Major Exploration phases lead to career questions, as it naturally follows that students wish to link their academic study with real world applications. Within the Career Exploration phase, students investigate how their fields of study and marketability factors lead to engaging employment opportunities. Advisors direct Exploratory students to the FSU Career Center, as well as point out external resources, including career websites, internship opportunities, volunteer work, and graduate school sources where students can better define their occupational focus.

1) Visit the FSU Career Center and investigate the many resources and services available to better understand career options. They are located in Room 1200 Dunlap Success Center and can be reached by phone (850) 644-6431.

2) Review the Occupational Outlook Handbook for the latest career information including training and education requirements, earnings, working conditions, and projected job openings for literally hundreds of occupations.

3) View the O*NET system , the nation's primary source of occupational information, providing comprehensive information on key attributes and characteristics of workers and occupations.

4) Consider the 16 Career Clusters and select the general areas of career interest and where they lead to specific career pathways.

5) Find inspiration at Roadtrip Nation from those who have set out on a quest to find their passion and purpose.

6) Participate in Service Learning and volunteer work to test the waters and make a difference at the same time! Hundreds of opportunities are available by visiting the FSU Center for Leadership and Social Change .

7) Explore graduate and professional schools at Peterson’s and start investigating future educational options.

8) Speak with FSU alumni using the ProfessioNOLE Network , a database of individuals who have agreed to share information about their career paths.
