What’s your favorite part of working with students?
Seeing students discover their purpose and mission in life. The process of discovering is impactful and fulfilling and is part of the reason I enjoy doing this work so much. See students overcome adversity and grow from it is something that teaches me how I can continue to pursue resiliency in this life.
What’s a fun or surprising fact about you that students might not guess?
I was born and raised in Miami, FL from immigrant parents who came over from Cuba when they were 17. My childhood was tough, but through that I learned to be resourceful and how to solve problems that came up growing up. My path may have been at times, but I ended up exactly where I needed to be. Your past doesn't define you. The most important step you can take, is the next one.
What’s a Tallahassee event or festival you always recommend to students?
The Tallahassee Greek Food Festival is a non-negotiable for me. The food is incredible, and it’s always in October so the fall weather is just starting to get going. It’s also good exposure to a culture that many students may not be familiar with. Definitely a must-see in Tallahassee!
Student Testimonial: “Roly has not only been a mentor for the past year and a half, but has been a friend. He encourages me to keep going when I feel defeated or down, and not only addresses right from wrong but also makes it known that the hardships are normal and there are more students out there who are struggling the way I am and that it is more common than it seems. He truly is amazing and I wouldn’t change having him as my life coach for anyone else.”
